Using the library collections

The best way to find items in the library is to search the catalogue.  This is because the library uses the Dewey system to classify books and you may find books on similar topics in different locations.  Always ensure that you note which collection an item belongs to before searching the shelves.

As a general rule, you will find items belonging to one of the following collections.

The General collection contains most of the library’s items which are available for loan.

The books in the Reference collection are not for loan and can be found mixed in with the General collection. They are easily recognizable on the shelf as they have a red ‘R’ sticker on the spine.

Reserve – Library Use Only

Prescribed textbooks and other resources for each course are placed in this collection. These books can be used in the library but cannot be borrowed or taken out of the library.

Reserve – 7 Day Loan

The items in this collection can be found in the same location as the Reserve-Library Use Only.  These are high demand items where you might find a second copy of the Prescribed text, or other books which the lecturers want all students to access. These books need to be returned after 7 days and cannot be renewed.

Q (Quarto) Large Books

Items in the Quarto collection are large books. These items can be borrowed having the same loan period as General collection items.

Contains additional resources which can be borrowed but cannot be housed in the General collection. The Compactus is located near the library printer.
